The apartment building has cultural significance, because of its 18th century streets and its reference to the Berlin wall and the original “Checkpoint Charlie” watch tower. The apartments are surrounded by historic buildings. These act as borders for the more transparent forms of the new building. The cantilevered roof and the 2 storey parking entry are historical icons.

An appealing aspect of this 30 room apartment development is its variety of dwelling types. Families are encouraged to live in ground level, two storey terraces with individual courtyards. Entry to terraces are from the garden which is separate from the main street.

At the opposite end of the building is vehicular entry. Definite distinction is made between vehicular and pedestrian entries which occur from different directions.

At ground level is the accommodation of smaller one and two bedroom apartments with balconies. The third type of unit are penthouses. These have their own terrace and are 1 and 2 bedroom. One lift services the apartments.

Checkpoint Charlie successfully deals with a variety of apartment types and the problem of dealing with a site amongst buildings of cultural significance, including heritage buildings. An interesting concept in the design, is the perceived front of the building (street elevation) being the circulation or service corridor of the apartments. The apartment outlook faces the opposite direction towards views and winter sun.

The site is located in Japan near a private railway station on the outskirts of Ryokuen-Toshi. The district is zoned residential and commercial. The apartment project contains 40 units designed around community space.

Residents were encouraged to be involved in the design process and expressed their fear in uniformity. The architects in consultation with the residents designed walkways, courtyards and open spaces to encourage discourse with the people and create a unique sense of place.

Commercial facilities occupy the ground floors for 2 stores. On Ground level is a courtyard space that is open 24 hours a day for the general public. Shops occupy the outer ring of the block and adjacent to the interior outdoor space are restaurants and cafes. Second storey retail outlets use void spaces and courtyards to create visual connection between residents and commercial facilities.

Residents are located on levels 3-5. These levels can only be accessed by residents. One lift and stairs access people from commercial uses to apartments.

The Inter Junction City development creates an interesting separation between public and private spaces. The paths and courtyards are neither, public or private, but exciting transitory spaces within the scheme. The project respects human scale through its massing, natural light and courtyard spaces. The versatility of apartment type and architecture create dynamic spaces. Entry to apartments are screened from public view and its locality changes between apartments. The project was designed without car-parking facilities because of the close proximity of the site to railway and bus routes.

Nexus World is a housing development on the southern island of Kyushu inJapan. A number of architects were invited to take part in the project, including Rem Koolhaas and Stephen Holl.

The apartment buildings were designed to relate to a variety of lifestyles through the creating of stimulating circulation spaces in combination with communal zones.

 
Open courts are ordered amongst 28 dwellings. The 4 open courts are connected to a central park which is issued by the general community. Covered courts are located on the first storey. Void spaces are common in the development becoming either walkways or public/private courts in different situations. Communal car-parking occurs at basement level.

The scheme encourages social interaction through its circulation but is brutal in its exterior, using concrete and metal in a bland colour scheme. On the positive side, is the interior of apartments which use timber and minimalistic furnishing to create human scale, using indirect light to soften the hard face of raw concrete.
